The formula

Margin = position value in USD ÷ leverage

One lot of EUR/USD at 1.0800 is worth $108,000. At 30:1 that needs $3,600 of margin; at 100:1 it needs $1,080. The position, and the profit or loss per pip, is identical in both cases.

Crypto habits to unlearn

Some crypto platforms advertise 100x or more. Retail forex leverage is capped at 30:1 on major pairs in the UK, EU and Australia, and 50:1 in the US, because higher leverage leads to rapid liquidations. Using less than the maximum leaves room for normal price swings.
